Khop Chai Deu is still going strong
This fork returned to Khop Chai Deu in Vientiane expecting an overpriced backpacker experienced.
Instead we drank a three-litre tower of Beer Lao with Keith Richard’s stunt double, snacked for four hours and paid 160,000 kip (US$21) for the lot.
The view of Nam Phu Fountain is now blocked by gaudy new development.
But the great French built industrial-style electrical sub-station remains with all its dodgy looking tentacles in tack.
I remember going to Khop Chai Deu just after it opened and this year the restaurant celebrates its 15th anniversary.
It was fun and unpretentious. I found little had changed.
I went back again two days later for another Beer Lao knockout tower, snacks, ibid. It was all pretty good – especially local dishes.

Local Lao food washed down with ice-cold draught beer were the best choices, sandwiches were tasty.
The final order, pizza (made with perfectly shaped packaged dough), was a mistake. Any experienced forker should know better.
Blame it on the Beer Lao tower of power.
